Photo Challenge #32/ Lines

20220721ma_1269“Swallows in a Row” / Theme: Lines

A little about this photo…

Caught this group of swallows chilling on the high wire. My question is, is one of those lines more comfortable than the other? Why are all the swallows on the one line and not the other?

Photo Challenge #31/ So Hot

20220720ma_1116“In the Tunnel” / Theme: So Hot

A little about this photo…

Here in Niagara (Ontario, Canada) we call electricity “hydro”. That’s because we get our power from a big waterfall. (If you guessed Niagara Falls, you’d be right.)

This is a shot from a visit to the newly-opened power station. And by newly-opened, I mean it’s open for tourists. The actual turbines are no longer in use, having closed a few years ago. (Not that we don’t still get our electricity from water… It’s just that the power is generated at a different facility.)

The coolest part of this tour is the elevator ride down to “the tunnel”. This tunnel carried the water out after it was used to generate power. On a hot, hot day, it was actually quite cold down here!

P.S. Thank you to the random tourists who are taking a selfie. You created a nice little silhouette!

Photo Challenge #30/ Yesteryear

20220721ma_1207“Down the Staircase” / Theme: Yesteryear

A little about this photo…

This is Dundurn Castle. (No, not a real castle! There are no real castles in Canada.) It’s basically a grand house and was the home of Sir Allan Napier MacNab, one of our pre-Confederation premiers. I have been to this house no less than four times over the past thirty years. This time we took the kids to visit this house of yesteryear. Fun to take the younger generation! (I don’t mind coming back either.)

That’s our tour guide leading us down the steps. We had a lot of questions. She seemed quite happy to answer all the questions even though I think our tour went a little over the hour!

Photo Challenge #29/ Fruit

20220703ma_0902“A Taste of Cherries” / Theme: Fruit

A little about this photo…

We have a little sour cherry tree in our yard. And these cherries are from this year’s harvest. We pick and pit and freeze. They will be added to the cherries already in the freezer.

One of these days these cherries will be … PIE!

20220618ma_0812“Lion on Guard” / Theme: Second to None

A little about this photo…

There’s something quite majestic about the lion, isn’t there? When I saw this stately fellow, I couldn’t resist taking his picture. He really is second to none.

Photo Challenge #25 / Blue

20220614ma_0792“Blue on Blue” / Theme: Choose Your Own Prompt / Blue

A little about this photo…

This is a bittersweet photo for me. This past week, was the funeral for my grandmother. This blue vase was part of her blue glass collection. I remember as a kid coming to visit my grandparents and looking at all the blue. (Her favorite color!) This particular vase is pretty special to me because it became a gift from her to me when I stayed with her a few years ago.

Photo Challenge #24 / At Day’s End

20220607ma_0770“Bee Safe!” / Theme: At Day’s End

A little about this photo…

It was a cold and rainy day when I came across this poor little bee. It was lying on the ground, so still that I thought it was dead. But then I saw that it did have some life, so I used a piece of paper to lift it from the cement floor and bring it inside the house. Into a plastic container. A quick search online gave us some idea as to how to save the bee.

A little sugar water (not honey!) and, if possible, a flower. A search outside led us to the only dandelion on the property. The bee didn’t seem too interested in the sugar water, but it immediately climbed onto the dandelion. It spent the night there. And in the morning, I put the container (including a fresh dandelion) outside in the sun.

Nobody actually saw the bee fly away, but it’s gone. I hope, to a full bee’s life!
